All of the coffees that we’ve had the pleasure of purchasing from Bolivia have come through Agricafe, a family business that does everything from exporting to milling to farmer education, even producing coffee themselves. “La Linda,” run by the Rodriguez family themselves, is a parcel in Caranavi that’s technically more of a protected bio-reserve than it is a coffee farm, and was their first foray into growing their own coffee. This particular lot comes from their first plantings of the Java variety back in 2013.
Like the mythically lauded Gesha variety, Java descends from Ethiopian landraces incrementally introduced to other growing regions over the course of the 20th century. Though still requiring ideal micro-climates, Java has proven itself more resilient and disease-resistant than its flashier cousin, while still imparting distinctly vibrant and floral flavor profiles that harken to its lineage. In addition to Java, La Linda is the pilot location for all of the varieties that Agricafe distributes to its own farms.
We’ve loved every coffee from Bolivia we’ve had the chance to represent, but this one is definitely the most dazzling in the cup. An exceptional variety grown on a model farm undergoing meticulous low-oxygen fermentation that amplifies its fruit character even more intensely… all signs point to stellar, and stellar is indeed an apt descriptor. Once brewed, you’re hit with a Jasmine Honeysuckle fragrance chased by juicy berry flavors that feel borderline fictional. It’s an absolute delight, and one that adds an amazing additional layer to our ongoing exploration of everything that this country’s coffee can be.
