DESCRIPTION

We know what you’re thinking — pretty in pink sticker, natural process, Baby Pacamara variety — this has gotta be some esoteric hipster pick targeted only at coffee über geeks (not to be confused with the coffee Illuminati, though, who have no time for naturals). Well, think again. Luis Alberto Balladarez Moncada is perhaps the biggest name in Nicaraguan coffee, producing a tremendous variety of offerings from various farms and beneficios each year. He is well-respected not only among importers and roasters worldwide but among farmers and coffee workers throughout his home country, pushing the envelope for what can be expected from Nicaragua, year after year.

Anecdotes about LAB conjure up images of a charming mad scientist — experimenting with myriad minutiae in the field and the mill, assessing results both quantitatively and qualitatively, never ceasing to yield a stellar smattering of options from cost-sensitive regional blends to top-shelf experimental marvels. For this reason, his work struck us as a fitting focal point for this season’s Affection Collection — a box set that presents a range of distinct coffees connected by overlapping people and places. This particular piece of that puzzle — the Small Pacamara — was the first of the forthcoming quartet that caught our attention, so we’re excited to give it a little solo spotlight time before the full ensemble takes center stage.

Finca Un Regalo de Dios (“A Gift from God”) sits along the northern border of Nicaragua, boasting 52 hectares of Arabica trees planted at a range of 1,350 - 1,700 meters. On this farm, Luis and his team host a huge range of varieties: Red & Yellow Catuai, Pacamara, Maracaturra, Java, Bourbon, Catimor, and several hybrids. Our importing pals at The Coffee Quest describe the surrounding micro-climate as a “clouded forest” <3 that keeps the temperature cool and stable, making the landscape unusually amenable to both natural and honey processes.

Living up to its name, the coffees produced on this farm form an embarrassment of riches. Three of the four coffees in this box set were grown and processed here, and this one is especially palatial, with glowing ephemeral energy that reminds us of regal fictional architecture (Howl’s Moving Castle? The Sultan’s Palace? Hogwarts? Minas Tirith?). Unlike all of these places, though, this coffee is real, and our bold recommendation is that you let yourself get lost in it. See you there.
