This is the FIFTH (!!!!) harvest year that we have purchased coffees from the ASDEFLOR cooperative in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala, and the fourth time we’ve featured Agapito Lopez himself. Earnest, sustained producer relationships like this are incredibly important to us, and keeping the dots connected is not always effortless. We are truly so thankful for the work that Agapito keeps doing, as well as the work that Shared Source, our importing partner, does to keep representing him and getting his coffees to us.
Sitting at 1,700 meters above sea level, Agapito’s setup is famously one-of-a-kind. Not having seen it with our very own eyes, it eludes easy description, but we know it to be a wild, rustic, DIY-OR-DIE abiding operation that defies expectations, year after year, with superbly sweet and satisfying coffees. This reputation, in tandem with our years of simply loving the results, conjures up quasi-mythical heroism in our minds’ eyes when we think of Agapito, one that’s only reinforced by his endless ability to reinvent his signature flavor profile based on the eccentricities of every harvest.
This year, Agapito’s giving us a classic, comforting, satiating flavor profile that reminds us of snacks we’d bring for a wholesome hike that are slightly too indulgent for the level of actual physical effort we’re exerting. AKA the reason for the season.
And with that said, this is also our FIRST EVER coffee to don a new seal of distinction for offerings that pull especially GREAT SHOTS of espresso. We’re talking day-breakers, ‘ccino-shakers, demi-slammers, all-day-jammers, that good good that does what needs doing and doesn’t demand every ounce of your energy to make it happen.
At time of writing, experts are unsure whether this one’s more of a NOTHIN BUT NET situation or a SLAM DUNK, but either way—it’s a bucket.
