DESCRIPTION

Fruitcake. Is it a festive treat? Sure. But is it more than that? SO MUCH. For us, it just might be the most fun feature of the year. Which is really saying something, cause truth is we are out here having a blast 24/7/365. BUT STILL. The transportive, nostalgic, adorable coffee that gets to become Fruitcake is always a wild thrill to find. To get it just right, we’re hunting for a feeling — cozy, celebratory, jubilant, special. And considering the long turnaround between CHOOSING a coffee and HAVING that coffee, finding this feeling is a sneak peek of holiday cheer that we get to glimpse during the dog days of summer. But now, those doggie days are behind us. It’s the most wonderful gd time of the year.

A husband and wife duo named Rodolfo and Berta Mendez produced this year’s Fruitcake. Rod and Bert have a small farm (shy of two hectares) in Chiapas, Mexico, planted with a mixture of Typica, Bourbon, and Marsellesa. They work with a producers’ group called Cafe Capitán, who works with Red Fox Coffee Merchants, our importing partners. Capitán is a young group, having broken off from a larger umbrella cooperative just two years ago for the sake of earning fair premiums for farmers investing in quality.

We’ve featured coffee from Mexico before, but this is the first time we’ve represented Chiapas. In Red Fox’s words, “Chiapas has a strong culture of organic production and cooperativism, but also more recently of incorporating new processes, planting new varieties, and making efforts to combine environmentally sound, yet profitable, coffee production with protection of important biosphere reserves.” With this debut, it’s a region we’ll undoubtedly keep on our radar moving forward. This particular pick has a gorgeously unique character — not so much because of eccentric flavors, but thanks to how they coalesce and levitate on the palate with an airy, fluffy mouthfeel that reminds us of marshmallows or high-end whipping cream. Combined with citrus garland aromatics and persimmony spiced stone fruit acidity, we have an undeniably festive offering here that we’re thrilled to share, regardless of which of Santa’s infamous lists you may catch your name on this season.
