DESCRIPTION

Alfredo Arenas is one of thirteen members of ASPROCAAR — a producers’ association based in La Argentina, western Huila, Colombia. His farm, Finca el Mirador, is located in Saladoblanco, a couple of hours south and west. Despite the hectic commute come harvest, we’re happy that Alfredo took his brother Floriberto’s advice and linked up with ASPROCAAR. As a longtime member, Floriberto conveyed the association’s track record of finding strong, direct-to-export buyers, and this is precisely what took Alfredo’s coffee from assimilation into large regional blends to this isolated micro-lot bearing his name.

Alfredo has just shy of 20,000 trees on his farm, ~3,500 of which are Pink Bourbon, ~1,200 Caturra, and Variedad Colombia comprising the remainder. This particular offering is made exclusively with Pink Bourbon — an increasingly in-vogue variety known for layering some classic South American cup characteristics with silkier, tropical flavors typically associated with East Africa. While we love the full gamut of what comes out of Huila, we can’t deny that Pink Bourbons often grab our attention on the cupping table. Alfredo’s rendition doesn’t go quite as far in the tropicalia direction as some others, so we’re excited to see this coffee fit into our menu somewhere between a classic “all-day” offering and something a smidge more adventurous. When brewed  up, we’re enamored with its creamy body, splashes of yellow spices, and the way it always sticks the landing on what can be a surprisingly dynamic journey from first sniff to final sip.

Aside from a strong variety selection, Alfredo keeps his coffees in tip-top shape with a meticulous washing process that moves from a brief low-oxygen whole-cherry fermentation to a longer low-oxygen seeds-only fermentation, and finishes with 15 - 20 days of drying on raised beds. Michelle from Shared Source is the importing pal who put this in front of us, and yet again, we owe her bundles of gratitude for the find. Working with ASPROCAAR since 2015, Shared Source has put in the work and the resources to gradually improve the group’s quality and consistency. Moisture meters have been donated, Grain Pro has been furnished, and best-practice recommendations have been made. As for how well it’s all worked out — the proof is nowhere but the pudding, and so far, we dig it.
