Ivan Montoya’s farm sits at 2,050 meters above sea level in Antioquia, Colombia—a region wayyyyy less common for specialty menus than its southerly counterparts of Huila or Nariño. He inherited “La Soledad” from his grandparents, and thanks to 10+ years of gradual improvements and investments in tandem with its raw elevation, he’s now got thousands of thriving Chiroso trees that support his aging grandparents in addition to himself.
CHIROSO is definitely one of the HOT VARIETIES on the scene right now, but real ones know that the Coffee Heads at TCU are allergic to trends and frankly couldn’t even key into The Scene if they wanted to. IN OTHER WORDS this is straight up sensational: richly saturated tropical fruits, the essence of sweetness, and blissful as a palm tree lined drive with the top down (based on movies this is our understanding of California).
Though the first to fully feature on our menu, this is the second lot that we’ve purchased from a new-to-us partner for Colombian coffees: Arango Specialty. Founded by the children of coffee farmers, Arango has deep and earnest relationships with producers throughout Colombia, and strikes a balance of quality and transparency that’s increasingly easy to mimic these days but as challenging as ever to sustainably uphold. Nowhere in the world is as thick with incredible coffees as Colombia, so we’re grateful to add another focused partnership into our network, and look forward to working together much more in the seasons to come.
