Gosh we love year-over-year buying.

It’s the cornerstone of our green coffee strategy. To simply be a witness of the product of such risk and resilience each year is a constant reminder that we are stewards. The best we can do is faithfully represent the work by passing it along with as little in the way as possible.

Case in point: Alirio Muñoz Ortega, Anayibe Ortiz and their family. Their coffee came to us in 2025 through our longtime importer partners at Shared Source, who have a knack for recommending producers who are doing The Hard Work.

The Ortega/Ortiz clan produces nearly ten distinct coffee varieties across their three land parcels near the Bruselas section of Huila. Not only do they work traditional varieties like Typica and Caturra, they are deeply nosed into the forefront of now-hot cultivars such as Bourbon Aji, Pink Bourbon and Caturrón.

Things really get interesting in year-over-year work when the coffee presents itself in a similar fashion as the year before but is holographically different! Like we are looking at the same picture through a different lens. 

Last year’s Caturrón was all red fruits and sun tea, where this year’s has a tea presence to it but it’s very distinctly dark purple fruits and berries in the cup. 

Through all our years, this is the most rewarding magic. Showing up and witnessing for the subtle shifts and the new views they offer.
