DESCRIPTION

Heleanna Georgalis has established herself as a true titan of the endlessly dynamic and complex industry that is ETHIOPIAN COFFEE. She has earned such a status by rising to an unanticipated occasion with tremendous aplomb, and going above and beyond ever after in collaboration with some of our very own friends over at Collaborative Coffee Source.

Heleanna currently helms Moplaco Trading, an Ethiopian export company founded by her father—already a third generation coffee exporter—in 1972. Heleanna was born in Harar, but left Ethiopia during the country’s long Civil War in the 1980s. She therefore attended school in Europe, eventually forging a successful career for herself in finance. Though she had not envisioned a return to Ethiopia, she made the difficult decision to do so when her father died, unexpectedly, in 2008. Though far from an expert in the trade at that time, Heleanna rapidly apprised herself of everything that she needed to know, concurrently adapting everything she had learned in distinct professional contexts abroad. Since then, she has continued to push the envelope, and now works with a number of washing stations representing thousands of producers across the country.

This particular coffee comes from the Hirut Semu washing station near the famed coffee town of Chelelektu. It was a 2023 harvest/arrival, which means it is joining our menu much later than we would ordinarily intend. However, exceptional longevity is among the many mesmerizing aspects endemic to well-transported Ethiopian coffee, and when our partners let us know that they had a little bit of this to go around this spring, we were dazzled by its elegance, concentrated purple fruit character, and the ease with which we were certain it could be an elite espresso. Sometimes, the relative softening or mellowing of a coffee’s vibrant acidity can actually work in its favor, so long as it is steered in the right direction — which is precisely what we aspire to do as roaster operators.

An absolutely amazing violet bomb of an espresso, we enthusiastically assure that this coffee makes GREAT SHOTS, especially as the spring + summertime have us wanting a little more fruit and floral in the cup!
